If they are a fellow healthcare professional, it’s easy - they will be registered and certificated by the HPC, the RCN or an equivalent body.
Until now, there has been no such organisation to check individual’s credentials for your Assistive Technology (AT) colleagues, such as wheelchair repair engineers, stairlift installers, specialist seating advisors, pressure care engineers or salespersons and so on. But now that’s changed.........
Many industry sectors (for example the gas industry), have recognised and trusted schemes to assess and register the competence of hands-on individuals and to signpost them to appropriate skill-enhancement courses. Their Societies monitor their members’ commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD). You then know whom to trust.
The Assistive Technology sector now has a society for the certification of people providing or supporting healthcare equipment.
AT Practitioners fill vital roles such as client/equipment assessments (often alongside clinical professionals as part of a multi-disciplinary team); installation and maintenance of equipment and many similar, practical hands-on tasks.
